Grammar·Lesson 01 / 23·Grammar in IELTS

Grammar is assessed within each response.

One of four equal criteria in Writing and Speaking. Use grammar to make your meaning clear in complete responses.

Learning grammar = useful preparation.
IELTS assesses language in use.

Knowing a rule can support practice. Writing and speaking show how you use it. The complete response provides the evidence.
Grammar matters when you use it — and when it makes meaning clear.

Where grammar is assessed.

Writing

Grammatical Range and Accuracy:
one of four equally weighted criteria.

Speaking

Grammatical Range and Accuracy:
one of four equally weighted criteria.

Reading

No separate GRA criterion.
Grammar can support comprehension and answer form.

Listening

No separate GRA criterion.
Grammar can support comprehension and answer form.

These are separate skills; do not add their criterion weights.

One criterion is not an overall shortcut.

Complete response Range, accuracy, and appropriate use are considered together.

One of four criteria in each skill
GRA is one of four equally weighted criteria in Writing and in Speaking.

A clearer view.

Writing has four criteria.

Review grammar in a complete response.

Purpose

What are you trying to say?

Meaning

Does the form make that meaning clear?

Control

Can you use it accurately in this response?

Revision

What would you change, then try again in a new context?

A teacher practice aid — not a band estimate.

A descriptor uses evidence.
No single sentence

A response is assessed as a whole. One sentence cannot set a result.

Range and accuracy
Appropriate variety and control are considered across a complete response.

Range and accuracy.

Do not assume a level from one pattern.

Choose variety when it helps your meaning; then check control.
3

A: repeated simple forms
B: varied forms with errors

ANot enough evidence to rank them
BEssay A scores higher
CBoth scores must be the same
A. Two summaries do not establish either essay's score. Range can support meaning; accuracy helps keep it clear.

Range and accuracy need context.

Use, review, and retry
Knowing rules can help. Practise using them in meaningful responses, then review and retry.

A response shows how you use language.
A rule alone does not show a full response.

Knowing a form can guide your practice. Use it when it makes your meaning clear.

From learning to using.

Three practice choices. No score shortcut.

Review one choice. A count is not a score.

After a meaningful response. Name the form. Try it again in new context.

Possible practice contexts.

Look at one sentence. A small grammar choice can affect whether its meaning is clear.Read it carefully. What would you revise?
Check the small words too: "She is one of person who make decision." One revision: "She is one of the people who make decisions."
Articles, plurals, and subject-verb agreement can matter for clarity. Review them as part of the whole response.

Use · review · retry.

CHECK
REVIEW
Check one choice after writing or speaking.
RETRY
CONTEXT
Try the same meaning in a new context.

Five review questions.

Learning a rule How will you use it in a response?
Reviewing accuracy Also consider whether the form fits the meaning.
Including Speaking GRA is also a criterion in Speaking.
Checking a sentence A sentence check is not an IELTS grade.
"I know it" → "I can review it" Use, review, and retry to make practice more useful.

Connect "learning" with "using."

Learning and using can support each other. Write or speak, then review one choice.

REVIEW

Check one choice, then retry it.

Progress needs practice.
Not a shortcut.

Useful practice can include: meaningful use, review, feedback, and retry. The pace differs for each learner.
